Dear Friend,
While some of my new colleagues in Washington D.C are advocating for our nation to turn to socialism they might want to look at what socialism has done to the nation of Venezuela. After years of socialism under Hugo Chavez and now Nicolas Maduro the economy of Venezuela has collapsed on itself. People are starving and a humanitarian crisis is now at hand.
Venezuela used to have one of the most vibrant economies in South America before the arrival of Hugo Chavez. Now the nation is being propped up by Russian and Chinese loans and its people are the pawns of Beijing and Moscow. All of the promises made to the people of Venezuela have been broken and the government programs that were to make their lives better are bankrupt. The world’s largest humanitarian crisis now resides in Caracas.
There will certainly be those that will point out that Maduro is a dictator and a very corrupt leader. I agree with those sentiments, but the problems all started with the false promise of socialism. Some of my new colleagues seek to rewrite history and point to Europe as the future of America, ignoring the fact that long-ago even Sweden sent socialism to the bottom of the Baltic Sea by reversing most of the cradle-to-grave programs they championed for so long.
In the future if you hear one of my new colleagues espousing an idea for a new government program and how it will be free to you and your family you might remember Venezuela. Thomas Jefferson put it best, “The best form of government is the one that governs least.”
Onward,
